Fans on an Angle?

For those who want to install a ceiling fan and have a slightly angled or raked ceiling, don’t worry at all! There are a large selection of ceiling fans on the market today that can be installed on angled ceilings.

The reason for this is that today ceiling fans come with a ‘ball joint’ mechanism. The fan consists of a usually cone or round shaped ‘canopy’ or metal cup, which is bolted to the ceiling. In the middle of the bottom of the cone, there is a hole and a rod comes through that hole to which the fan is attached.

At the top of the rod is a ball which stops the rod from falling through the hole, but also means that it has the movement to ensure the rod will always go straight down due to the weight of the fan at the bottom.

For some fans, there are special kits that are available that allow you to install a fan up to 45 degrees. There are some fans which do not use the ball joint mechanism, rather, the top of the fan motor attached directly to the ceiling. This means they cannot be installed on angled ceilings. Please read the description of the fan you are considering carefully to see if this is the case.

Alternatively, shoot us an email or give us a call! There are some other factors to keep in mind when you are installing a fan on an angled ceiling. Firstly, as your ceiling is sloping down towards the wall, make sure installation will not be too close to the wall, because depending on the length of the blades, the slope of the ceiling and the placement, they may hit the ceiling.

You will also not get good optimal air movement if the blades are very close to the wall or the side of the ceiling. A related issue to this will be that when installing on a sloping ceiling, to avoid the blades being too close to the ceiling slope, you may need to lower the fan with an extension rod. These situations will normally only be of concern when the angle is significant.
