For a small outdoor space we would typically recommend a 48″ diameter fan or smaller. In the above example you can see a scale diagram of a 48″ diameter ceiling fan in a 3m x 3m square area.

In a medium area we would typically recommend a fan within the 48″ to 56″ diameter. The above shows an example of a 52″ diameter fan in a 4m x 4m square space.

Very large spaces may require a very large fan or even multiple fans. In the above example we have a 60″ diameter fan in a 5m x 5m space.
